With the release of the new Samsung flagship range, we’re answering all the important questions, such as is the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G waterproof?
With each new release, Samsung blow their last handset out of the water (no pun intended) and the S21 was no different. So that you can make the most informed decisions about your new purchase.
What is an IP rating?
An IP rating is the official certification given to a device to prove its resistance to small particles and liquids. IP stands for ingress protection. Without this rating, a manufacturer cannot claim that the device is resistant to these materials to any degree. Each addition to the Samsung Galaxy S21 range has an IP68 rating. This is pretty standard across mobile phones nowadays, however, provides a great level of protection to the phones. Of course, it does have its limitations, which you must pay attention to.
Limitations of the S21 5G
One of the main limitations when it comes to water resistance from the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G is the time limit. You can use this smartphone in water for up to 30 minutes at one time. If you leave the phone in water for any longer than this, you risk corroding the seal of the phone. This means water will have the potential to make its way into your phone and damage it to the point it’s unfixable.
Another limitation of this device in water is that you can only take it up to 1.5 metres underwater. This won’t be an issue as long as you aren’t taking your phone deep into the sea. It’s about the depth of an average swimming pool. If you’re just wanting to get some photos in the sea or even under the water in the pool, you’ll find this is plenty. Taking the S21 deeper than 1.5 metres will introduce it to pressure it isn’t built to withstand. This can damage parts of the phone, such as the chip and the battery, reducing performance over time.
One huge perk from this IP rating is that we can see the phone is completely resistant to damage from small particles. By small particles, we mean materials such as dust, sand and mud. You won’t have to worry about these making their way into the phone and damaging it. If you do so happen to drop your phone in a load of mud and notice that the charging port is packed with sand, we would advise just cleaning it up. This will help preserve the life of the S21 but also make sure it stays looking nice.
Is the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G waterproof?
So, is the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G waterproof? It isn’t completely waterproof. The Samsung Galaxy S21 5G is somewhat water resistant. You’ll be able to use this device in up to 1.5 metres of water for 30 minutes before you risk damaging it. This is a great specification to have, especially if you’re clumsy! Whenever you do get the phone wet, whether you spill a drink or take it in the pool, we would advise just drying it off to ensure you’re looking after it as well as you can.
