What is the Product Security and Telecommunications Act 2022?
The Product Security and Telecommunications Act 2022 is a piece of legislation aimed at tackling cybersecurity and privacy vulnerabilities in consumer-connected devices.
2 Parts of the Product Security and Telecommunications Act 2022
The Product Security and Telecommunications Act 2022 is split into two parts, Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure.
Part 1: Product Security: This section establishes a new regulatory scheme to enhance the security of consumer connectable products, often called “smart” products, by defining minimum security standards to protect them against cyber-attacks.
Part 2: Telecommunications Infrastructure: This section includes measures aimed at speeding up the deployment and expansion of mobile, full-fibre, and gigabit-capable networks throughout the UK. These measures involve legislative changes, including amendments to the Electronic Communications Code, addressing the rights of Code operators regarding the installation, maintenance, and use of electronic communications equipment.
What’s the Main Aim of the Act?
In a nutshell, the main aim of the act is to help improve the overall connectivity and broadband for UK consumers by strengthening and amending the Electronic Communications Code. This will ultimately improve the UK’s resilience to cyber-attacks regarding products such as smartphones, smart home devices and wearable technology.
