From the days of the iconic Sony Ericsson W8801 to the ultra-modern 2023 iPhone 15, mobile phone technology has come a long way. For a sweet taste of nostalgia, we’re taking a look back at the evolution of mobile phones focusing on four pinnacle moments, and putting forward our predictions of what exciting tech might be coming in the future.
The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X – The First Portable Mobile Phone (1983)
Can you believe once upon a time the only way you could use a phone was inside the home? The first ever portable mobile phone was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X released in 1983, and it retailed for a staggering $4000! This phone at the time was a sign of huge status and took a whopping 10 hours to charge fully.
Sharp J-SH04 – First Mass-Market Camera Phone (2000)
Nowadays cameras on mobile phones are standard – I mean even the most basic ‘brick’ style models have one. The first mass-market camera phone however was the Sharp J-SH04 which was released in November 2000 and was only available in Japan. It featured a 110,000-pixel (0.11-megapixel) lens and there was also a non-camera version of the handset. Fun fact, Sharp initially offered this device to Japan’s biggest mobile network operator NTT DoCoMo but they rejected the idea of the camera phone. However, when Sharp alternatively approached J-Phone a smaller operator in the business, they loved the idea! The camera version of the J-SH04 sold out within 2 weeks, whereas the non-camera version remained on the shelves.
We predict that smartphone cameras will practically replace professional cameras in the future – not only are mobile phones significantly cheaper than DSLR cameras but they’re also more compact. 2023 saw some exceptional smartphone cameras enter the market for example the Samsung Galaxy s23 Ultra’s exceptional 200MP quadruple lens set up.
LG Prada – The First Mobile Phone With a Capacitive Touchscreen (2007)
Marketed as part of a tie-in with the iconic fashion brand Prada, the LG Prada officially known as the LG KE850 was the first mobile phone with a capacitive touchscreen. It boasted hardware buttons on the front which sat below a captive touchscreen and was mainly made of plastic. This model launched a month before the first iPhone, and had two things the Apple device didn’t – flash and captured video – a win for LG!
In the future, we predict that foldable mobile phone screens will continue to become popular picks. Already smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 are impressing fans worldwide, getting rid of people’s stigma that flip phones are old school – so more of these are definitely incoming.
Google Nexus (2011) – Google Wallet First Digital Wallet
Digitally paying for things is second nature now, but you can probably remember a time when you had to pay for everything physically on your card – how old school! In 2011, Google launched the first mobile payment technology platform ‘Google Wallet’, which was accessible through an app from a United States mobile phone network. An example of a phone which would’ve had Google Wallet at the time is the Google Nexus.
And there you have it, four massive mobile technology advancements that paved the way for modern technology. As the year goes by more exciting advancements await.
